Since the dance curriculum was first introduced to the College in 2003, the year the girls first joined the College, interest in the dance programme has continued to grow for both girls and boys; an interest that is reflected in the large number of students who select dance as an examinable course of study and who audition for our Dance productions each year.

As part of the assessment for their Senior College course work, there is both a performance and a choreographic element at all three levels of NCEA.

Our Dance students meet these objectives with the work they undertake preparing for the College Dance Showcase that brings 150 dancers to the stage in a selection of original choreographies prepared and presented by the students for their NCEA assessment. In addition, some of our drama (NCEA) and theatre arts (IB Diploma) students are involved with the technical and production aspects of the show.

Our senior dance students also have opportunities to provide choreography for our Middle School students.

Our dance students are fortunate to have two dedicated dance studios in which to work and rehearse.

Hip hop, ballet, jazz, cultural performances and personal dance styles are all catered for and their shows are a joy to watch.

The Dance Academy

The Dance Academy/Extension Programme caters for different levels and styles of dance, including classical ballet, contemporary, jazz and hip-hop. Students audition for a place, attending extra Period 0 (before school) and Period 7 (after school) classes as well as Saturday classes. The extra classes include coaching, pilates, yoga and conditioning, as well as learning dance works for performance, both at College and beyond. The classes are taught by College dance staff, as well as a range of itinerant dance specialists who expose the students to a wide range of teaching and performance styles.
